What foster care/adoption region of Texas do I live in?

For the purposes of managing foster care and adoption, the State of Texas is divided into several geographical regions. It’s important to know what region of the state you live in so you can gather accurate information and connect with agencies serving your community.

If you reside in Collin, Dallas, Ellis, Fannin, Grayson,  Hunt, Kaufman, Navarros or Rockwall Counties you are a part of Metroplex East (formerly Region 3). The information provided on this page is specific to the licensing agencies who serve this area. If you live outside of these counties you can use this link to search a map of Texas and determine your region.

How many children are waiting for adoption?

Over 1,000 children right here in our community are waiting for adoption from foster care. The most urgent need is for families for children who are over the age of 12, children with special needs, minority children, and large sibling groups.

If an adoptive family cannot be found for a child before they turn 18, the child will “age-out” of foster care. A small number of teens choose to participate in the supported independent living program for young adults who’ve aged-out of foster care. Joining a family, even late in childhood, forever changes the trajectory of a child’s life.

Can we open our home to more than one child?

70% of children in foster care in Texas are part of a sibling group. If you have the space and capacity to care for more than one child, you can be a part of keeping brothers and sisters together while in care. Only 6 children under the age of 18 are permitted in a licensed foster home. This includes any biological or adopted children already in the home. On rare occasions, exceptions may be made if it is in the best interest of the children involved.

Children are permitted to share rooms with other children close in age, and of the same gender. Your child placing agency will help you calculate how many children your home can accommodate. Beyond minimum square footage per bedroom, your parenting experience, children already in the home, and other factors may impact how many children your agency will license you to care for.
